Empowering Through Fashion and Compassion
I'm Letitia, also known as Amaya, I am the founder and CEO of Amaya for Africa. My journey began in the UK, where I was born to a Ghanaian mother. Returning to Ghana helped me reconnect with my roots and heritage. During my travels, I met a talented local dressmaker struggling to support her children. This encounter sparked an idea: to bring Ghana's vibrant fashion to the UK.
In an act of compassion, I bought her creations and sold them in the UK, using the proceeds to buy her a sewing machine. This small gesture marked the start of Amaya for Africa, blending Ghanaian culture with the UK's fashion scene.
Leading Amaya for Africa has changed the lives of over a thousand vulnerable adults in rural Ghana. We provide tools and training to help individuals start their own micro-businesses in the fashion industry. I work tirelessly to promote and sell their creations, ensuring they have the resources to thrive.
Seeing the difference a simple sewing machine can make fuels my passion. Watching the makers uplift their families and communities gives me a sense of purpose.
My work is driven by love and resilience. My childhood was filled with challenges, but they shaped me into someone who rises above setbacks. Through my experiences, I've learned that even the toughest times can lead to growth and empowerment.
I'm not one to write or talk much about myself, but my work speaks for me. I live from a place of love, which brings peace and leaves no room for ego or pride. Collaboration is key, and I've grown personally and professionally since meeeting Genevieve, and working with Elev-Eight.
Helping others and creating a better world is my mission.
I volunteer at the shop in the UK—Heart Shopping Centre in Walton on Thames—where all our products are displayed. I'm proud to say I am part of an eco-system that allows 100% of product sales go back to the makers.
Through simple acts of kindness, I've been able to elevate thousands of lives. My work shows how one person's efforts can make a huge difference in a community.
